The Beginning
We are constantly starting over. Life is designed that way. I have said of myself for decades “I have no fear, I have only love.” No fear. That means trusting the universe at every turn.
I took my creative director hat from the top shelf and placed it at the bottom. As I placed my familiar brushes up on the top shelf, I found other tools. Some I hadn’t seen in years, others I never used. I found materials like newspapers and cans, bubble wrap and discarded toys. I found my camera, next to my sander, next to my old diaries. I was getting a vision, clear instruction to head in an unclear direction.
A friend asked me – like only a true friend can – who am I to jump into the contemporary and conceptual art arena? After all, I’m a painter. I thought of the flashes of inspiration that were coming to me constantly now, and wondered: who am I to reuse this work?
Philosophy
Inspiration is everywhere. I think of being inspired as being ‘in spirit.’ That is to say, being connected to your source. Ideas and concepts are ready to download, one only needs to plug in.
Plugging in requires doing nothing, which is not as obvious as it sounds. Embrace silence, sit still, watch your breath, and listen. You don’t need formal training. Its simple enough. Stop. Hush. Breathe.
